Biography
Andrew Gregg Curtin Bierer was born in Pennsylvania and moved with his family to Kansas after the Civil War. He was admitted to the bar and finished his legal education at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., in 1886. He returned to Kansas and opened a law practice in Garden City before coming to Guthrie, Oklahoma, in the Land Run of 1889 and opened a new law practice. He served as the city’s attorney from 1891 to 1892 and was one of two members from Kansas on the initial committee elected to organize a provisional government in Guthrie.
After a distinguished law practice, he was appointed by U.S. President Grover Cleveland to serve as an associate justice on the Supreme Court of Oklahoma Territory (1894-1898). After his retirement from the bench, he continued to serve in private practice.
Fun fact
Pennsylvania Governor Andrew Gregg Curtin was a close friend of the Bierer family and requested that when Bierer was born he be given the name Andrew Gregg Curtin Bierer. However, Bierer wanted to stand on his own merits and preferred to simply use the initials, A.G.C.
