Willis Maxson Chambers was born in Kansas and prepared for his teaching career and graduated from Edmond’s Central State College (now the University of Central Oklahoma) in 1914. He received two more degrees, one from Berea College in Kentucky and the other from the University of Oklahoma. He was admitted to the Oklahoma Bar in 1923 and received his doctorate from Colorado State College (now Colorado State University) in 1948. He first taught in the public schools at Cushing, Oklahoma (1915-1917), and served as principal of the school until 1919, when he became superintendent of Newkirk Public Schools (1919-1923). Chambers then served as superintendent in Perry, Sapulpa, and Okmulgee until he became president of Central State College in 1949. He served as superintendent until his retirement in 1960.
