Biography
Julien Charles Monnet was born in Iowa and received several degrees from the State University beginning in 1892. He practiced law in North Dakota and Iowa from 1893 until 1904, and received his law degree from Harvard in 1908. Monnet first became a law professor at George Washington University in 1908 and moved to Norman in 1909 to found the University of Oklahoma College of Law, where he also served as Dean until 1941. He was acting president of the University (1911-1912), served as an editor of the Harvard Law Review and was a contributing writer in many law journals. A monument and statue of Julien C. Monnet was erected near the entrance of the original University of Oklahoma Law Center building in 1980, and a biography of Monnet’s life, entitled The Dean, was written by his son-in-law and published by the University of Oklahoma Press in the early 1970s.

Dean Julien C. Monnet was an avid tennis player and won championships in several states.
