Biography
Maud Lorton Myers was born in California and majored in art, music, and voice in college. She was married to Eugene Lorton in 1911 and came to Tulsa as a bride. Two years later, Mr. Lorton became sole owner of the Tulsa World. Maud Lorton was a leader in cultural activities in Tulsa and was an original patroness of Philbrook Museum of Art and supporter of Gilcrease Museum. She was a life member of the Tulsa Boy’s Home and in 1949 was recognized by the Tulsa Chamber of Commerce for her outstanding civic work. Mr. and Mrs. Lorton donated the Eugene Lorton Hall of Business Administration at the University of Tulsa and a memorial 86-bell carillon was presented in memory of Mr. Lorton. St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Tulsa was built in honor of their son Robert Eugene Lorton.
Fun fact
Maud Myers was a founder of the Tulsa Philharmonic and Tulsa Opera, Inc., was named Oklahoma’s Mother of the Year in 1956 and was the Outstanding State Woman in 1953.
