David Phillip Richardson

“[I am] returning to the city of my adoption; to the people whom I love, believing it to be mutual and who have made me what I am.”
David Richardson, 1937

Biography

Born in Missouri in 1869, Dr. David Phillip Richardson graduated from Louisville Medical School before coming to Union City in Oklahoma Territory in 1894 to establish his medical practice. His professional skill, honesty, and integrity soon elevated him as the city’s most prominent citizen. He served as medical examiner for three leading insurance companies and later bought the area bank to save it from closing. Dr. Richardson also served as the town’s postmaster and was appointed by Oklahoma Governor E.W. Marland to serve as State Bank Commissioner. He spent his life in service to others and held memberships in numerous medical associations, civic clubs, and was an official of the Oklahoma Bankers Association.

Fun fact

Though Dr. Richardson delivered more than 3,000 babies, traveled hundreds of miles as he made house calls in his horse-drawn buggy, and operated a family clinic from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. each and every morning, he was also well-known as a prominent banker, druggist, gentleman farmer, and even as a postmaster!
